Petroleum transport is the transportation of petroleum and derivatives such as gasoline (petrol). Petroleum is transported via rail cars, trucks, tanker vessels, and pipelines. Which method is used to move this oil depends on the amount that is being moved and its destination.
Transportation modes depend on variations of the internal combustion engine, with the two most salient technologies being the diesel engine and the gas turbine, since they are the linchpin of globalization. While ship and truck engines are adaptations of the diesel engine, jet engines are an adaptation of the gas turbine.
The percentage has gone down due to efficiencies in the system, less money needed for infrastructural projects, and efficiencies caused by companies looking to save money. Railroads tend to have the most amount of profit associated with them due to the low variable costs of operation compared to other modes.
The extent to which conventional non-renewable fossil fuels will continue to be the primary resources for nearly all transportation fuels is subject to debate. But the gap between demand and supply, once considerable, is narrowing, an effect compounded by the peaking of global oil production
Transportation by cars and trucks radically changed the face of our country over the last hundred years, with petroleum providing the fuel for our vehicles
